Shared wallets: how to share a wallet with other people
Share a wallet with specific people: who sees and edits what, private transactions, importing, moving transactions, and what happens when someone leaves.
Share a wallet with specific people
A shared wallet is one wallet that several people record their spending in, so everyone sees the same balance. It is never public: only the people you invite can see it.
- Open the wallet, choose Edit Wallet, then the Members tab.
- Choose Add person.
- Pick people from your connections, or type an email address to invite someone new. You can choose several at once.
- Choose Send invite.
The invitation waits until the person accepts it. They find it on their People page, and as a card under Shared with me on the Wallets page. Until they accept, they can see nothing in the wallet. You can cancel a pending invitation from the same Members tab. Only the owner can invite.
See who is in it
A shared wallet's page has a Members card with faces and a count. Open it to see everyone by name. Only the owner sees other people's email addresses, and only the owner gets the link to manage them.
To see everything you share in one place, open Settings, then Household. It lists each person who has accepted, with the wallets, budgets and events you share with them.
Who can edit what
Every member sees the balance and every transaction in the wallet, except other people's private ones, and can add their own transactions.
You can edit or delete only the transactions you added. That holds for the owner too: nobody can change someone else's transaction. Open someone else's expense and its details name them under Added by.
The owner also decides everything about the wallet itself: its name, currency, balance correction, members, ownership, moving transactions, and archiving or deleting it. A member can still pin, reorder or archive the wallet for themselves. A wallet cannot be deleted while other people are in it.
Personal and Household
Once you share a wallet or a budget, Stats gets a Show switch: Personal or Household. It stays hidden until then.
Personal counts what you added yourself, from any wallet, including your own transactions in a wallet someone shared with you. Household adds everyone else's transactions in the wallets you share, and their expenses in the budgets you are in. See how to read your statistics.
Balances follow the wallet, not the person. On the dashboard, the total balance counts the wallets you own and a Shared card adds up your shared wallets. The income and expense cards there count what you added, and the Spending table has its own Personal and Household switch.
Filter the lists
In the transaction, expense, income and transfer lists, shared wallets carry a Shared badge, in the rows and in the filter. The filter also offers Show and Added by.
Show starts on All, which is every row you can see. Personal narrows the list to wallets you own, whoever added the rows, which is not the same as Personal in Stats. Added by picks out one person's rows.
Private transactions
When you add a transaction to a shared wallet, you can switch on Private transaction. Then only you can see it, everywhere: in lists, search, stats and shared budgets. The switch appears only for shared wallets, and only the person who added the transaction can turn it on or off.
Private does not mean left out of the money. A private transaction still changes the wallet balance and still counts in the totals everyone sees. Other members just cannot see the transaction itself. In their stats its amount is counted under Uncategorized, without its category, emoji or colour. If a balance looks bigger or smaller than the visible rows explain, a private transaction from another member can be the reason.
Importing into a shared wallet
Any member can import a statement or scan a receipt into a shared wallet. The drafts stay visible only to the person who imported them until they publish them.
Duplicate checking looks at what other members have already published, so a statement you both import should not be counted twice. It cannot see other members' private transactions or drafts, though, so a private one can still be counted twice.
If two of you import the same statement, publish one at a time. When you publish something that matches a transaction another member already added (same wallet, type, amount and date), the app stops on it and asks. You can drop your draft and keep their transaction, or publish anyway if it really is a separate payment.
Moving transactions
Only the owner can move transactions, from the Move Transactions tab. You choose them with filters (whose, dates, type), then Select all matching, and pick another wallet you own or a new one. Nothing moves until you confirm, and it runs in the background, like an import.
Only mine moves just the transactions you added. Everyone's moves everything you can see: yours and other members' shared ones. Other members' private transactions are never moved this way.
Transfers stay behind, as do drafts. If the wallet you are moving to is not shared with someone whose transactions would move, you choose for each person: share the new wallet with them, or leave their transactions where they are. A transaction never lands in a wallet its author cannot see. Any transaction edited while the move runs also stays behind, and the result tells you which. Both balances change once, at the end.
Leaving and being removed
A member can leave from the Leave tab, and the owner can remove a member from the Members tab. Either way, SavingStat creates a new wallet on the leaving person's account and moves every transaction they added there, private ones included. Their history goes with them, and the shared wallet's balance drops by what those transactions added up to.
Owners cannot leave. Hand the wallet over first, or delete it once nobody else is in it.
If you want to split things up fairly, the owner can first move their own transactions to another wallet with Only mine, then remove the other person.
Handing over ownership
On the Ownership tab, pick a member, a connection, or type an email address. If you pick a member who has already accepted, ownership moves straight away and you stay in the wallet as a member. If you pick someone else, they get an invitation and you stay the owner until they accept. You can cancel it while it waits, and declining changes nothing.
The wallet's balance moves out of your total balance on the dashboard and into the new owner's. While you stay a member it counts in your Shared card instead. Every transaction stays with the person who added it.
When someone deletes their account
If a member deletes their account, it works as if they had left first: their transactions go to a new wallet on their own account, which is deleted together with the account. The shared wallet loses those transactions and its balance changes to match.
If the owner deletes their account, ownership passes to the member who has been in the wallet longest, who gets an email about it. The owner's transactions stay in the wallet so the balance still adds up, but their name and comments are removed, and nobody can edit them any more. Their amounts and dates remain, and in a wallet shared by only two people the other person may well still guess whose they were. A wallet with no other accepted member is deleted along with the account.
