Track Your Spending on Every Trip

Some spending belongs to a trip rather than a month. Group it into an event, bring in the people travelling, and see what the whole thing cost.

Spending that belongs to a trip

An event is an occasion that spending belongs to: a trip, a wedding, a renovation. It has a name, an emoji and a description, and any expense can be filed against it alongside its ordinary category, so trip spending does not disappear into your everyday groceries and transport.

One figure for the whole trip

An event totals everything ever filed against it, from the flights booked months early to the taxi home. That is one figure for the whole occasion, however long it took to accumulate, which is exactly what a monthly view cannot show you.

There are no dates to fill in. A trip's start is read off the earliest spending recorded against it, which is usually the flights or the deposit.

Bring the people travelling

Invite the people coming and everyone files their own spending against the same event. An invitation is pending until the person accepts it, and ownership can be handed over, because the person who set the trip up is not always the person settling it up.

Foreign currency stays honest

Travel spending usually happens in someone else's currency. Every transaction records two things: what the purchase cost, and what actually left the wallet, so nothing is rounded away. The multi-currency expense tracker page explains how that works.

After the trip

Archiving is how a trip closes. The event moves out of your active list and nothing it recorded is touched: the expenses stay where they are, still attached, still counted in the event's total if you go and look.

Common questions

Can I track spending for a single trip?

Yes. Create an event for the trip and file expenses against it. The event totals everything ever filed, one figure for the whole occasion.

Can other people on the trip add their spending?

Yes. Invite them to the event and they file their own spending against it. An invitation is pending until they accept it.

What about spending in a foreign currency?

Every transaction records what the purchase cost and what actually left the wallet, so foreign amounts stay exactly what they were.

Do I have to set trip dates?

No. A trip's start is read off the earliest expense recorded against it, so there is nothing to fill in beforehand.

What happens when the trip is over?

Archive the event. It moves out of your active list, and every expense stays attached and counted in its total.

Give the trip its own place

Create an event before you go and every cost lands in it, from the first booking to the last ride home.
